December 2018, Pres report by Mark McMillan

Ho ho ho ... man it seems way to early to be saying that ... feels like it was just Christmas a month or two ago. I guess it's close though, we can tell because Kamloops Cowboy Festival tickets are selling fast. November 1st the phone started ringing at 8:00 am!!

Things are coming together quickly, and pretty good too, as far as I can tell. Tickets are selling well and there's a lot of interest in the dinner dance and the harmonica workshop.

We have two meetings coming up this month, one for the Joe Martin Award and the other for the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame. There are some great nominations in both so I'm looking forward to the results of the meetings. Check back on our web site in early December to find out who was accepted.

Brett Kissel Winds Up Part Two of his Nation Wide Tour

It looks like December 7th, in Bonnyville, AB, will be the final stop on Brett's Nation Wide Tour. He's been a busy guy ... I believe he will have done somewhere around 100 shows!!

A good number of those shows were sold out, too!!

Brett is the reigning CCMA Male Artist of the Year and when you take in one of his concerts you know why. Kathy's nieces in Ontario took in his show in Milton and were thrilled ... they got to do the meet and greet too, which made it even more exciting! We also heard through the grape vine (OK it was through Billie and Hugh McLennan), that the show in Kamloops was a super show as well.

Brett met with them before the show and also dedicated a song, Tough People Do, to them during the show. He doesn't forget his roots!

Amanda with Brett in Williams Lake
Amanda & Brett

That was November 13th in Kamloops. November 14th he was in Williams Lake for the first of two concerts there. The next night is when we went. We took Amanda who works with Kathy and is a huge Brett Kissel fan, and Joanne a good friend that just likes music ... and she's heard Brett before, years ago with us ... maybe at a concert in 100 Mile or at the Dusty Rose Pub in 70

Chevonn with Brett in Williams Lake
Chevonn & Brett

Mile House. We met another friend, Chevonn, who lives in Williams Lake. We all totally enjoyed the show!

Brett pointed at us, then gave us a wave, then tipped his hat as soon as he stepped on stage ... still trying to figure how he could see into a dark audience with lights in his face! Part way through the night he did the same for us as he did for Billie and Hugh by talking about us and the Kamloops Cowboy Festival then playing "Tough People Do" for us!

He'd been throwing the odd tee-shirt and/or ball cap into the crowd all night and towards the end of the show he picked up one more and was ready to throw it when he looked me right in the eye ... then came the football quarterback throw straight at me! If I hadn't caught it the tee-shirt would have hit me dead centre in the chest - what a throw!!

Note the shirt ... not just a Kissel license plate ... but a BC Kissel license plate! :-) Not sure if he did a different license plate for each and every province or not ... but I'd guess he probably did.

For more information on Brett, the rest of the tour, and his other bookings, music, etc, see his web site at: www.BrettKissel.com.

Another person we knew at the concert was the daughter of our local Radio personal Larry Rode. Larry is the morning guy at CKBX in 100 Mile. His daughter, Celina, was right up at the stage and got some great photos with her phone. Here's three of them:

The 19th Annual 100 Mile House Cowboy Concert

February 16th, 2019 - Two shows 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM

Tickets should be on sale at the beginning of December ... hopefully anyway! At only $20 each they make great stocking stuffers or Christmas presents so keep your eye out for them! In Williams Lake you'll be able to get tickets at the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin and at PMT Chartered Professional Accountants. In 100 Mile House PMT Chartered Professional Accountants, Work-n-Play and 100 Mile Feed will carry them.

There are two shows every year. There's a 2:00 pm Matinee so that folks travelling, or folks that don't like winter driving, can get to the early concert and still get home a ecent time. Folks that like to go for dinner in town and then take in the evening show can go to the 7:00 pm show! The shows are both the same so either one will be a great show!

Here's a little about the entertainers:

All three performers have been part of this concert in past years and we've had requests to bring all three back again .... so here they are!!

Tim Hus is known to have a voice sweeter than a Husqvarna chainsaw, a wit that is sharper than rusty barbed wire, and a list of songs longer than a Saskatchewan fence line! People love Tim ... both for his musical ability and for his wit and humour! Stompin Tom Connors once said "Canada needs more singers like Tim Hus! He'll be joined by Jason Ruscheinsky and Hugh McLennan.

Now anyone that listens to the Spirit of the West Radio Show every Sunday, or has been to the Cowboy Concerts or Kamloops Cowboy Festival over the years will know Hugh ... and he really needs no introduction. One of the best parts is that with Hugh here I don't have to MC and you won't have to listen to me again this year!!

Kamloops Cowboy Festival goers will know Jason, especially if they took in the Rising Star Showcase. Jason won this a few years back and has been on main stage since. Last year in Kamloops he won the Horse Barn's "Keeper of the West Award" that is voted on by the fans. He's also been part of the 100 Mile Cowboy Concert and numerous other concerts around the area.

Miles Kingdon's New Book
Beyond the Next Ridge
A Cowboy's Story

Although Mile's picture on the back of his new book is in black and white anyone that knows him knows he's a very colourful character! His new book titled Beyond the Next Ridge, A Cowboy Story, reflects Mile's lifetime of riding ... and on some of the biggest cattle ranches in BC.

I haven't received a copy yet but I'm really looking forward to reading it when I do. I have no doubt that the stories in the book are just as colourful as Miles himself. To top it off the illustrations in the book are by Rob Dinwoodie, another colourful cowboy.

I know the first run is going to run out quick ... and I say first run because I'm sure popular demand will have them getting a second run. Right now to order a copy you can email Mile's wife Possum at: kposs77@gmail.com. The cost is $18 Canadian plus shipping and handling.

The 17th Annual Spirit of the West Cruise!

We're back ... and we're happy!

We saw Quebec City, the Maritimes, New England, and New York City!!

178 Spirit of the West listeners met in Quebec City on September 16th and spent their first night in the Chateau Frontenac. The second night was spent aboard the Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas cruise ship but still in port. This gave everyone a couple of days to explore Old Quebec ... an amazing historic town.

We then sailed down the St Lawrence River and around the Gaspe Peninsula to our first stop in the Maritimes, Charlottetown, PEI.

Horseback riding in PEI
The 7 of us that went riding in PEI

A few of us took a private tour of part of the Island and then went for a horseback ride. The next stop was Sydney, on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia and from there we sailed to Halifax. Four motor coaches awaited us there and took us on a private group tour to Oultons Farm and then to the Hants County Fair - the oldest continuously run fair in North America at 252 years young!

Our last stop in the Maritimes was Saint John, New Brunswick and the next day we were in New England ... Bar Harbor, Maine (Bah Hah Bah as they pronounce it). From there we visited Boston, Massachusetts, Portland, Maine, and ended up in New Jersey where two buses awaited us. We were part of the group of 86 people that opted for the New York post cruise package ... so off we went to New York City!!

The post cruise package included a ton of stuff ... museum passes, hop on-hop off bus passes, free breakfast at Applebee's every morning, an end of stay steak dinner in the Rockefella Center, a big league baseball game, a Broadway Show, and we loved every minute of all of it ... wished we had had another few days in the big city ... oh ya, passes to the Empire State Building ... so much I don't remember what all was included. 86 cowboy rancher type folks wandering around in "the city that never sleeps" ...
